North Fork Trail #303: A short trail that travels though both open country and shaded forest. The portion that is more southerly and more south facing melts out and drys in the early spring. The trail's forested portions take much longer to dry out. Use as an out-and-back until it is not muddy near the trail's north/river end.
Mid-summer wildflowers and nice views of the Boulder Mountains near where the trail intersects with Chocolate Gulch Trail.
Access is from the Fox Creek Trailhead. Head over the footbridge that crosses the Big Wood River. Stay left after the bridge for a short distance to another intersection of trails, then stay right and head west up the Fox Creek Trail. Soon you will arrive at an intersection of trails and North Fork Trail #303 on the right. This is the way to approach the trail in the early spring. Later in the season the trail can be approached off of the Chocolate Gulch Trail. The northeast end of the trail intersects with the Chocolate Gulch Trail, but this end of the trail remains under snow and muddy much longer than its opposite end.
There is a vault toilet and an information kiosk at the Fox Creek Trailhead. The Fox Creek Trailhead parking area is a pull-through parking area that can accommodate those with horse trailers. There are a couple of hitching posts available for equestrian's use. The Fox Creek Trailhead is a day-use facility. No camping.
Directions: From Ketchum, drive north on Highway 75 to the Fox Creek Trailhead on the left/west after about 5.8 miles. Follow the Forest Service Road 020 a short distance down to the river and trailhead facilities.
