STANDALONE TRAIL MAP
GENERAL COMMENTS: October 11, 2024
I don’t think we could have asked for a more beautiful fall so far. Though mid next week it looks like the weather and temps might turn. For now, take advantage of this incredible weather. This weekend would be a great time to plan an adventure to get up high in the mountains, as it might be one of the last warm weekends with the colder weather closing in.

Update: KRD reports the Norton Road and Norton Trail Head closure ends October 16th! The Forest Service completed the bridge installation, toilet installation, and TH improvements at Norton. A huge thanks to the Forest Service for the upgrades!

Last week Wood River Trails Coalition reported that the new Imperial reroute is open. If you haven’t already, head out Greenhorn to check out the results of WRTC and Ketchum Ranger District’s Greenhorn Improvements Project. They are asking people to stay off the old sections of Imperial and Greenhorn as they are being rehabilitated. WRTC will be doing a massive planting effort to help the riparian area regenerate October 15th and 19th. Head to their website to sign up if you would like to volunteer.

The trial crew working on the new BLM trail above Silver Lining is moving along. This trail will add about four more miles to our growing Hailey trail system, along with some great new views of our valley and mountains. Keep an eye out for more trail closures once construction moves back over Silver Lining later this month or early November. If the crew and BLM feel there is potential for debris to fall on the trail below, they will start daily closure of Silver Lining on the Quigley side again. For now, enjoy the Silver Lining trail knowing even more miles of trail are being worked on and are anticipated to be completed later this fall! For more information contact the BLM Shoshone Field Office, 208-732-7200.

Though trail updates are starting to quiet down, there is still plenty of fun to be had out on our local trails. Get out and enjoy them!

Reminders:
New BLM trails, Hang Tight and Hang Loose, are open! They are located in Hangman Gulch, just above Hailey’s Old Cutters neighborhood. For more information go to BCRD’s Summer Trailinks. If you are on a mountain bike, remember to slow down on blind corners or in any area where you don’t have a great sight line. The new trail is fun, but there are a few places where you can surprise someone.

Keep the trail reports coming! User reports of trees down on the trails are a huge help! Remember to mark the coordinates or get a good idea of the milage from the trailhead or junction, then report them on the WRTC trail report form or email me the information. For reports of trees down on Galena trails, email me the trail name and approximant location.

Sheep
When traveling through areas with sheep, stay aware of your surroundings and give the sheep and their guard dogs plenty of space. If you are on a bike, it is recommended to dismount and walk your bike past the sheep dogs. For more information on traveling through areas where sheep are likely, visit our trails alert section on the Summer Trailinks page.

The Forest Service reports that we are down to our last couple bands!
The Corral Creek/Pioneer Cabin band is in the bottom of Johnstone Creek and will trail off the allotment around 10/13
Warm Springs band has moved into the Red Warrior area. This band will graze back over Lodgepole through Greenhorn Creek. It will be in Panther gulch around 10/15.

Items of note:

October 15th & 19th: WRTC Volunteer opportunities. See woodrivertrailscoalition.org for more information and other events.

All water fountains on Wood River Trail and at Quigley Bike Park have been turned off.

Ongoing: Stage 1 fire restrictions in Sawtooth National Forest
Winter is coming! If you are a Nordic skier and/or a snowshoer- BCRD trail passes go on sale October 14th!

When you head out for your adventures, feel free to report back anything you see that you think should be shared. Email me, the BCRD Trails Coordinator, Ashley Knox at aknox@brcd.org.

Enjoy the trails!
As we move into fall and potentially cooler and wetter conditions, keep in mind if you encounter extended sections of mud, please use your best judgement and turn back if you cannot pass over the section without causing damage to the trail.

Motorized closures on some forest service trails went into effect on August 30th. These trails include- Castle Rock #140, Placer Creek #141, Adam’s Rib #142, Rooks Creek #145, Osberg #147, Barr Gulch #168, Oregon Gulch #183, Fox Peak Connector #938 and Big Peak/East Fork of Big Peak #076.

Wildlife is present. For information on recommended best practices when wildlife are encountered, visit this site's Trail Alerts Section.

As always, let's not forget our manners and trail etiquette no matter where we are or how we recreate. A quick reminder- bikers yield to hikers, and hikers and bikers yield to horses, then downhill yields to uphill. If in doubt, just yield to each other and meet someone new while you talk about how lucky we are to be in such an amazing place. Bottom line is to be kind to each other and enjoy being out on the trails.

Continue to look to this site for up to date trail info. Please be aware of changing conditions and considerate of trail conditions when you head out for your adventures.
