GENERAL COMMENTS: November 1, 2024
October provided an incredible Fall and at the last moment ushered in November with our first official snow in the valley. With this shift in weather, be sure to plan your trail adventures accordingly. The temps and weather will have a huge impact on the trails. We might see some melt/freeze cycles providing us with wet, muddy, and slippery conditions until we fully settle into winter. If you do encounter extended muddy conditions, it is best to turn back and pick another route. For smaller muddy section that are passable, please stay on the trail. Going around the section can cause trail braiding or widening. Finally, when you head out, don’t forget your layers, temps can change quickly in our mountains!

More wildlife will be moving down into our valley with the recent snow and future storms. Be sure to maintain awareness of your surroundings. Keep your dogs under voice control or on a leash to prevent them from chasing wildlife. Look at our TRAIL ALERTS page for tips and reminders on recreating around wildlife. Over the winter keep in mind there are conditional closures that will possibly impact some trails in the South Valley between January 1-April 30. These closures are implemented if the land managers feel it is necessary for the health of the deer and elk populations. In our North Valley there is a yearly closure in the Warm Springs drainage to protect wintering elk and deer. Please respect these and educate yourself before heading out. Contact the Ketchum Ranger District or BLM Shoshone Field office for more information.

As you continue to venture out this this winter, stay aware and safe. Many of our trails go through avalanche terrain. If you plan to travel through avalanche terrain, know before you go. Check out the Sawtooth Avalanche report https://www.sawtoothavalanche.com.

BLM reports the Quigley side of Silver Lining will remain closed Monday - Friday, 7:30AM-5 pm while the trail crew completes the finishing work on the new 4-mile trail. Thank you for respecting these closures and giving the crew the space to do their job safely. Silver Lining will still be open on the Olympia Gulch Side. For more information contact the BLM Shoshone Field Office, 208-732-7200. We will continue to post updates on the new trail on Summer Trailink.

The Ketchum Ranger District has provided a great overview of what they accomplished this summer. Check out the KRD Trail Crew Annual Report attached to this email. We are so lucky to live in an area with so many people and organizations working towards similar goals.
This will be the last BCRD Trails Update of the season. We will continue to update the Summer Trailink with new information as need this Fall. Please feel free to continue to reach out to me with any comments, concerns, questions, or reports. WRTC ‘s website will still have a trail reporting form via Trail Forks that they are also encouraging people to use throughout the winter.
Thank you for a great season and for all your reports and enthusiasm! As you continue to head out for your adventures, feel free to report back anything you see that you think should be shared. Email me, the BCRD Trails Coordinator, Ashley Knox at aknox@brcd.org.
Enjoy the rest of your Fall and Winter!

As always, let's not forget our manners and trail etiquette no matter where we are or how we recreate. A quick reminder- bikers yield to hikers, and hikers and bikers yield to horses, then downhill yields to uphill. If in doubt, just yield to each other and meet someone new while you talk about how lucky we are to be in such an amazing place. Bottom line is to be kind to each other and enjoy being out on the trails.

Continue to look to this site for up to date trail info. Please be aware of changing conditions and considerate of trail conditions when you head out for your adventures.

If you have questions, comments, concerns, or reports about the trails please email BCRD Trail Coordinator Ashley Knox (aknox@bcrd.org), or phone 208/578-2273. For area land management agency contact info, go to the Trail Alerts section of this site.
