STANDALONE TRAIL MAP
GENERAL COMMENTS: October 25, 2024
Somehow, we are already entering into our last week of October. Temps are finally starting to feel like winter is coming, but the glorious days of Fall are still giving us plenty of opportunities to get outside. So hopefully you all are able to take advantage of it!

BLM reports the Quigley side of Silver Lining will most likely be closed starting next Tuesday October 29 - November 8th. The trail crew is making its way back Lining and construction will be occurring above Silver Lining, and there is the possibility of falling debris. The closure would be Monday - Friday, 7:30AM-5 pm. Thank you for respecting these closures. Silver Lining will still be open on the Olympia Gulch Side. For more information contact the BLM Shoshone Field Office, 208-732-7200.

This last month the WRTC volunteer moto crew continued to cut out trails as needed. They recently cut out deadfall from the greater Greenhorn area, Warfield Connector, South Fork & Middle Fork of Warm Springs, Lick Creek, and more. Just in October they cleared around 35+ trees. A big thanks for keeping our trails clear!

Though trail updates are starting to quiet down, there is still plenty of fun to be had out on our local trails. Get out and enjoy them!

Reminders:

• Ketchum Ranger District reported that they have completed the bridge installation, toilet installation, and trailhead improvements at Norton trailhead! Norton Road and trailhead are officially open and looking good!

• The Wood River Trails Coalition and Ketchum Ranger District announced the Greenhorn Improvements Project Phase 1 is complete! The new rerouted sections of Greenhorn and Imperial trails are open, and the restoration efforts in the riparian area, former bridge sites and trail sections are finished. The new, and only, way to access the main Greenhorn trail and Imperial trail is from the west side of the parking lot, in the trailer turnaround, where the Cow Creek connector trail is also located. Please stay off of the rehabilitated areas so the newly planted plants can flourish, the beavers can do their thing, and we can lessen our impact in the area. Thank you to everyone for being understanding this summer during all of the project work!

• New BLM trails, Hang Tight and Hang Loose, are open! They are located in Hangman Gulch, just above Hailey’s Old Cutters neighborhood. For more information go to BCRD’s Summer Trailinks. If you are on a mountain bike, remember to slow down on blind corners or in any area where you don’t have a great sight line. The new trail is fun, but there are a few places where you can surprise someone.

Items of note:
• All water fountains on Wood River Trail and at Quigley Bike Park have been turned off.

• Winter is coming! If you are a Nordic skier and/or a snowshoer- BCRD trail passes are on sale now! Preseason prices until November 24th. Bcrd.org

• Ongoing: Stage 1 fire restrictions in Sawtooth National Forest

Keep the trail reports coming! User reports of trees down on the trails are a huge help even as the season begins to wrap up! Remember to mark the coordinates or get a good idea of the milage from the trailhead or junction, then report them on the WRTC trail report form or email me the information. For reports of trees down on Galena trails, email me the trail name and approximant location.

Sheep
When traveling through areas with sheep, stay aware of your surroundings and give the sheep and their guard dogs plenty of space. If you are on a bike, it is recommended to dismount and walk your bike past the sheep dogs. For more information on traveling through areas where sheep are likely, visit our trails alert section on the Summer Trailinks page.
• Last week the Forest Service reported that we are down to our last band of sheep on Forest Service Land. They started grazing in Limekiln on October 22nd and will graze in that area for about 5-7 days before shipping off.

• BLM Reports there is a large herd in Colorado Gulch. They will be in the area until November 7th.

When you head out for your adventures, feel free to report back anything you see that you think should be shared. Email me, the BCRD Trails Coordinator, Ashley Knox at aknox@brcd.org.

Enjoy the trails!

As we move into fall and potentially cooler and wetter conditions, keep in mind if you encounter extended sections of mud, please use your best judgement and turn back if you cannot pass over the section without causing damage to the trail.

Motorized/ebike closures on some forest service trails went into effect on August 30th. These trails include- Castle Rock #140, Placer Creek #141, Adam’s Rib #142, Rooks Creek #145, Osberg #147, Barr Gulch #168, Oregon Gulch #183, Fox Peak Connector #938 and Big Peak/East Fork of Big Peak #076.

Wildlife is present. For information on recommended best practices when wildlife are encountered, visit this site's Trail Alerts Section.

As always, let's not forget our manners and trail etiquette no matter where we are or how we recreate. A quick reminder- bikers yield to hikers, and hikers and bikers yield to horses, then downhill yields to uphill. If in doubt, just yield to each other and meet someone new while you talk about how lucky we are to be in such an amazing place. Bottom line is to be kind to each other and enjoy being out on the trails.

Continue to look to this site for up to date trail info. Please be aware of changing conditions and considerate of trail conditions when you head out for your adventures.

If you have questions, comments, concerns, or reports about the trails please email BCRD Trail Coordinator Ashley Knox (aknox@bcrd.org), or phone 208/578-2273. For area land management agency contact info, go to the Trail Alerts section of this site.
