Description / Access Information
Old Toll Road Trail:
The old Galena Summit toll road winds its way up the headwaters of the Big Wood River. From the lodge to Galena Summit it is 6 miles. The Old Toll Road Trail portion is 4.6 miles long. It follows the original path of a wagon road that was constructed over the summit in the early 1900s. It is considered to be of intermediate difficulty.

There is no parking available at the start of the Old Toll Road Trail, so you will likely want to start your trip from Galena Lodge. From the lodge you can follow singletrack trails to the low end of the toll road. To do so, from the lodge deck/bike shop/lawn area, carefully cross Hwy 75 and then the Big Wood over a footbridge to take the next right onto Northwood Trail. Stay on Northwood at trail intersections by staying right and following the signs. At the fourth intersection of trails the way is marked for finding the Big Wood Loop Trail, and the way back toward the lodge. Turn right here too, and cross a footbridge before coming to a short but steep little uphill which will quickly deposit you onto the Old Toll Road Trail. Turn left to climb up the Old Toll Road Trail toward Galena Summit. Or, turn right and descend a little ways to the Old Toll Road Trail's intersection with Crosscut Trail. Crosscut leads to a crossing of Hwy 75 and the trails originating in the Horse Creek drainage.

Geting to the lodge: Head north from Ketchum. Galena Lodge is about 24 miles up the two-lane highway, on the right. If you are coming from points north, come over Galena Summit. The lodge is about 6 miles down, on the left.
