STANDALONE TRAIL MAP
GENERAL COMMENTS: October 18, 2024
Yesterday we had a shift in temps and are continuing to move towards less hours of daylight. If you head out for a morning or evening jaunt on the trails you are likely starting to bring a headlamp. As our trail season begins to wind down, I hope everyone has had some great adventures and are continuing to get out before the snow flies.

Ketchum Ranger District reported that they have completed the bridge installation, toilet installation, and trailhead improvements at Norton trailhead! Norton Road and trailhead are officially open and looking good!

The Wood River Trails Coalition and Ketchum Ranger District are happy to announce the Greenhorn Improvements Project Phase 1 is 99% complete! The new rerouted sections of Greenhorn and Imperial trails are open, and the restoration efforts in the riparian area, former bridge sites and trail sections are almost finished. A total of 3,000 native plants will be planted by the end of the project! The new, and only, way to access the main Greenhorn trail and Imperial trail is from the west side of the parking lot, in the trailer turnaround, where the Cow Creek connector trail is also located. Please stay off of the rehabilitated areas so the newly planted plants can flourish, the beavers can do their thing, and we can lessen our impact in the area. Thank you to everyone for being understanding this summer during all of the project work!

Though trail updates are starting to quiet down, there is still plenty of fun to be had out on our local trails. Get out and enjoy them!

Reminders:
• The trial crew is making progress on the new BLM trail above Silver Lining. Keep an eye out for more trail closures once construction moves back over Silver Lining later this month or early November. If the crew and BLM feel there is potential for debris to fall on the trail below, they will start daily closure of Silver Lining on the Quigley side again. For now, enjoy the Silver Lining trail knowing even more miles of trail are being worked on and are anticipated to be completed later this fall! For more information contact the BLM Shoshone Field Office, 208-732-7200.

• New BLM trails, Hang Tight and Hang Loose, are open! They are located in Hangman Gulch, just above Hailey’s Old Cutters neighborhood. For more information go to BCRD’s Summer Trailinks. If you are on a mountain bike, remember to slow down on blind corners or in any area where you don’t have a great sight line. The new trail is fun, but there are a few places where you can surprise someone.

• Motorized/ebike closures on some forest service trails went into effect on August 30th. These trails include- Castle Rock #140, Placer Creek #141, Adam’s Rib #142, Rooks Creek #145, Osberg #147, Barr Gulch #168, Oregon Gulch #183, Fox Peak Connector #938 and Big Peak/East Fork of Big Peak #076.

Keep the trail reports coming! User reports of trees down on the trails are a huge help! Remember to mark the coordinates or get a good idea of the milage from the trailhead or junction, then report them on the WRTC trail report form or email me the information. For reports of trees down on Galena trails, email me the trail name and approximant location.

Sheep
When traveling through areas with sheep, stay aware of your surroundings and give the sheep and their guard dogs plenty of space. If you are on a bike, it is recommended to dismount and walk your bike past the sheep dogs. For more information on traveling through areas where sheep are likely, visit our trails alert section on the Summer Trailinks page.

We are getting close to the end of sheep in the valley. Forest Service reports
- Warm Springs band should have grazed back over Lodgepole through Greenhorn Creek and should be grazing in Panther gulch. They will be grazing in Limekiln starting on October 22nd. They will graze in that area for about 5-7 days before shipping off.

BLM reporting: Expect Sheep in the area October 23rd-26th. You might encounter sheep and sheep guard dogs on Hidden Valley, Bullion Connector, and Two Dog (aka Bull Dog) trails October 23rd-26th.

There are also reports that:
- Sheep will traveling south on the WRT early this week and moving out Croy.
- Sheep will be moving into Greenhorn this week.

When you head out for your adventures, feel free to report back anything you see that you think should be shared. Email me, the BCRD Trails Coordinator, Ashley Knox at aknox@brcd.org.

Enjoy the trails!

As we move into fall and potentially cooler and wetter conditions, keep in mind if you encounter extended sections of mud, please use your best judgement and turn back if you cannot pass over the section without causing damage to the trail.

Wildlife is present. For information on recommended best practices when wildlife are encountered, visit this site's Trail Alerts Section.

As always, let's not forget our manners and trail etiquette no matter where we are or how we recreate. A quick reminder- bikers yield to hikers, and hikers and bikers yield to horses, then downhill yields to uphill. If in doubt, just yield to each other and meet someone new while you talk about how lucky we are to be in such an amazing place. Bottom line is to be kind to each other and enjoy being out on the trails.

Continue to look to this site for up to date trail info. Please be aware of changing conditions and considerate of trail conditions when you head out for your adventures.

If you have questions, comments, concerns, or reports about the trails please email BCRD Trail Coordinator Ashley Knox (aknox@bcrd.org), or phone 208/578-2273. For area land management agency contact info, go to the Trail Alerts section of this site.
