Long Gulch Trail #123: Pioneer Cabin is one of the most popular hiking destinations in the Sun Valley Area. Long Gulch is the lesser known and lesser traveled access to Pioneer Cabin from the Corral Creek drainage. It climbs up a forested ridge and across a flowered plateau to incredible vistas. At the top of the trail is Pioneer Cabin and stunning views of Hyndman, Old Hyndman, Cobb, and other mountain peaks in the Pioneer chain.
Pioneer cabin is situated at the brink of a steep drop into the North Fork of Hyndman basin. It was modeled after alpine huts in Europe, and built by the Sun Valley Company in 1938. They built the hut to make skiing in the Pioneer Mountains more accessible for the Alpine Touring branch of their ski school. Several of the dramatic peaks viewed from the cabin were named by the members of the Alpine Touring program for colleagues who were killed while serving in the 10th Mountain Division during World War II.
Thank you to the volunteers who were headed up by Olin Glenn (owner of Sturtevants) and his father Bard. They and about 40 volunteers have been working over the course of the several summer seasons (2016, 2017, 2018...) to rebuild the cabin and bring it back into a maintainable shape. Its looking great and it will live on as a valley treasure for years to come thanks to all of you. Thank you also to the Ketchum Ranger District for their support and help with the work and to the National Forest Foundation for awarding a $10,000 grant for supplies and materials.
Directions: Drive NE from Ketchum on Trail Creek Rd. to Corral Creek Rd. #137 (5 mi). Turn right and stay on the main dirt road to the trailhead (3.9 mi).
There is a vault toilet at the trailhead. No camping at the trailhead, but dispersed FS camping sites are located lower along Corral Creek Road.
